POKOTABI / Tapushirogu
タプシログ
Kinshicho's Filipino eatery Tapushirogu pairs home-style stews and set meals like pork sinigang, Bicol Express, and kare-kare with bowls of steamed white rice.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step through the door and you are greeted by shelves of Filipino groceries and everyday dry goods, with cafeteria-style dining tables tucked behind. Hand-lettered menus plastering the walls list comforting home-style favourites, setting a casual tone for a satisfying, unpretentious meal.
A natural place to begin is the pork sinigang, anchored by the sharp, refreshing tang of tamarind. Eggplant, okra, and tender pork meld into a broth with just enough body to revive the palate with every spoonful. The kitchen also turns out other comforting soups, from the bitter, rich offal broth of papaitan to bulalo, where the deep marrow flavours of bone-in beef enrich the bowl.
Rich braises that call for extra rice are another main draw. Bicol Express simmers pork until meltingly tender in a mildly spiced coconut milk sauce, offering a creamy kick well suited to steamed grains. Kare-kare pairs its nutty peanut sauce with salty bagoong shrimp paste to cut through the richness, while taro-leaf laing and the humble, comforting warmth of mung-bean monggo round out the spread.
Evenings are well spent grazing on smoky pork skewers, crispy fried lumpia spring rolls, or squid adobo alongside a cold beer. If you have room left, traditional desserts such as halo-halo offer a refreshing, sweet finish to an everyday slice of the Philippines.
